Expense groups

Shared labels for related expenses in a box—helps Transactions Analysis when the bank bills them together.

Overview

An expense group is a shared label for related expenses in the same box. It shows on the expense list and helps Transactions Analysis when the bank posts those expenses as one charge.

How to use groups

Keep each line as its own expense for planning (different amounts and schedules). Give them the same group name when they belong together—especially if the bank sometimes or always bills them as one payment. It is fine to use a group just to keep related lines together.

Example

Gym is £50 every month; Gym Maintenance is £30 in March and September. In those months the bank often posts £80 once instead of £50 and £30. Group both as “Gym” so analysis can match that combined charge to the expenses due then. In other months only Gym is due, so a £50 charge still matches. If the bank posts £50 and £30 separately, analysis falls back to matching them one-by-one.

Tips

  • Prefer related expenses in one group.
  • Avoid putting unrelated bills under the same label, in case one leftover charge equals their combined total and gets treated as a single settlement.
  • Put merchant text in an expense’s name or description to help matching either way.

In the app

Set the matching group when editing an expense. The info tip describes the same behaviour.
