Kinds of boxes

Goal, fixed-amount, and expense-driven boxes—and what Accounts compares against.

Overview

Every box serves a purpose. How you fund it shapes what Accounts compares against (one primary line at a time). Think of soft “spend up to this” pots versus hard “these bills must be paid” schedules—Liquify expresses both with the same box, configured differently.

Expense-driven boxes

Leave the monthly amount blank and schedule dated expenses inside (bills, subscriptions). Liquify totals them for you. Account vs plan uses Needed for upcoming bills. If dated expenses exist, Needed wins even when a monthly amount is also set.

Fixed-amount boxes

Enter a monthly amount—for example groceries or free spending—with no goal and no dated expenses. Amounts often change as life shifts. Account vs plan compares your linked balance to Planned.

Goal boxes

Set an optional Goal—a total balance to reach, like an emergency fund, vacation, or tax reserve. The monthly amount is how you refill; Account vs plan and Account progress track the goal, not the refill. With dated expenses, you see Needed for bills and goal progress separately.

Leave Goal blank if you do not track a target. Use Goal for the destination balance—not the monthly amount field.

Combining refill and goal

You can set both a monthly refill and a Goal when you want a funding habit and a target balance.

Categories (Needs / Wants / Savings)

Separately from funding style, you can tag boxes as Needs, Wants, or Savings. That mix feeds Plan Analysis; it does not replace the amount / goal / expenses setup above.

In the app

Create or edit boxes on Plan. Amount and Goal each have an info tip that matches this guide. Link an account under the box or on Accounts when you want live comparison.
